studying with a learning disability

Studying with Dyslexia

With Dyslexia, studying can be extremely difficult, especially with the workload of a Medical degree at university.

I spend my days on my laptop, which has special programmes to assist with my needs.
At my university, we get the slides a few days before the lecture, so I save these lecture notes and open them up in the lecture to make notes. I type faster than I can hand-write so I think this is the best idea.

I use a device called Note Talker. It is a microphone and an IOS app which allows me to record lectures to listen back to in my own time. This app is a life saver! The lectures power through all the slides so having a recording to listen back to when I need to is great!

Another piece of software I have is called Claro-Read. This allows me to have my assignments/notes read out to me as I struggle to read and pick up grammatical errors. Having my text read out to me means I can actually hear the mistakes! Some of the mistakes I have made are hilarious when spoken!
Claro-Read also allows me to check synonyms which I could have got wrong.

The last piece of software I have is called Global Auto Correct, this automatically corrects my spelling errors. I regularly spell words wrong, from silly little errors to not being able to spell big medical words. So far, Global Auto Correct has found 918 mistakes in my work!

This software has helped my university grades so much!!

However, they are not the only things to have helped me!

In my first semester at uni, I had to memorise bones, origins and insertions of muscles, ligaments and their movements. To assist me with this, I bought an anatomical, life size skeletal model, which I called LeBone James!
This was the best decision of my life!
1. I have a skeleton!!! And yes, when I feel lonely, I talk to him like he’s an actual person!
2. I got 83% on the exam.
It’s a win win!!

I love bright and different images to help me learn. Images that have a different way of presenting themselves interest me and assist me in learning. My two favourite images are below.

Personally, the ‘London underground’ image is amazing! Something completely different to looking at the simple skeleton image.

Heading back to university, i am glad i have all these things in place to help me with my studies.
