week 8

Week 8 at university

Monday’s lecture o ACL injuries was of no interest to me at all. We touched on the screw home mechanism which is during knee flexion where the tibia rotates 10 degrees.
The anterior cruciate ligament, the ligament Junior Brown’s recent injury teared, consists of an anteromedial and posterolateral band which gets taught during knee flexion and extension. Hence why most ACL injuries happen during a non-contact knee extension or flexion, as seen in the Michael Owen ACL tear in 2006. The ACL provides stability and proprioceptive feedback to the knee, restraining tibial translation, hyperextension and rotation of the tibia. Surgery is a common method of restoration by taking tissue from the other limb to construct a new ligament.
Attached is a rehab programme from Brukner and Khan’s clinical sports medicine.

On Tuesday, we looked at TENS (transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation), I spent the lecture on amazon fining a cheap machine to give it a try, I ordered it and it is now due to arrive in the week and I couldn’t be more excited.

Wednesday, I had a day off. I spent most of the morning trying to motivate myself to get out of bed after the Jeremy Kyle show. I did about 200 words of my last assignment due in mid-December, just before the Christmas break, leaving me all of the Christmas break to revise for my 3 exams, cervical/ thoracic spine examination and assessment, lumbar/SIJ spine examination and assessment and a rehab exam.

Thursday was ok, the day was spent learning about spinal pathologies ready for our exam. Very nervous about this exam due to my high expectations off the tutors after last year’s grades.
A practical session looking at special tests of the lumbar spine and the SacroIliac joint.
The tests were hard and I need to practise a lot.

In kinesiology, we looked at Tissue mechanics. Zoned out in the lecture and was not with it at all. Just wanted to get home.
Need to prep for clinic as well so will be a busy week.

Off home to watch my dad run, STEPS are on tour in Liverpool which I am absolutely buzzing to go!!!!! And the doggo’s are down for the weekend.
