week 8

Week 8 at university Monday’s lecture o ACL injuries was of no interest to me at all. We touched on the screw home mechanism which is during knee flexion where the tibia rotates 10 degrees. The anterior cruciate ligament, the ligament Junior Brown’s recent injury teared, consists of an anteromedial and posterolateral band which gets taught during knee flexion and extension. Hence why most ACL injuries happen during a non-contact knee extension or flexion, as seen in the Michael Owen ACL tear in 2006. The ACL provides stability and proprioceptive feedback to the knee, restraining tibial translation, hyperextension and rotation of the tibia. Surgery is a common method of restoration by taking tissue from the other limb to construct a new ligament. Attached is a rehab programme from Brukner and Khan’s clinical sports medicine. On Tuesday, we looked at TENS (transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation), I spent the lecture on amazon fining a cheap machine to give it a...

Week 7.

This week has gone so slow As usual, a 9am lecture that was so boring and We has to plan a 30 minute hydrotherapy session for next week’s class.  Tuesday was pointless. A lecture on sports science. No. Point.  Wednesday was a day off. Spent the day in bed. No work done and had 5 hours with a friend eating pizza and just chatting.  Thursday was a full day of lumbar and sacroiliac joint spine examination and assessment. We started with revision of cervical and thoracic E+A and progressed to movements of the lumbar spine how to measure them and over pressure.  Practise makes perfect so watch out family and friends! Friday was actually the first time I didn’t enjoy kinesiology. My head wasn’t with it and I just wanted to get home. Learning about a paper my lecturer co-wrote about the isokinetic dynamometer and how to work it etc. The practicle led on from this and we set up the IKD and analysed some data on the hamstring to quad ratio.  ...

Week 6!

Week 6. Half. Way. Through. Semester. One.  This week has gone so fast As usual, a 9am lecture that was so boring and I cannot even remember what the lecture was about.  The seminar was on core stability. Literally an hour of breathing exercises and how to engage the core.  Tuesday was a day off!!! No clinic lecture. Lie in. A whole day of work.  I had a draft back for my anatomy and physiology case study so I spent all day doing that and little jobs.  Wednesday was the same. I went to watch the men’/ basketball narrowly lost to keele university and the women’s team win against Chester university.  A player went down with what looked like a sprained ankle which she described as her malleoli touched the floor.  Referred on for an X-ray which came back inconclusive.  Immediate ice and elevation to avoid swelling.  Thursday was a full day of cervical and thoracic spine examination and assessment. We started with revi...

Week 5!

Week 5 This week has gone so fast As usual, a 9am lecture that was boring and about ankle injuries.  I find the content interesting just the lecturer reads off the slides and there is no point at all being there.  Next came the practical. We went through a hamstring protocol again but this time we actually got to do it.  That afternoon we got to do an ultrasound test to see if we are competent in setting up the machines and knowing what frequency is for each acute, sub acute and chronic injuries.  Acute had a frequency of 0.1-0.3h Sub acute had a frequency of 0.2-0.5h Chronic had a frequency of 0.3-0.8h.  Tuesday again was boring. The hour lecture was about CPD and reflection.  Pretty pointless but was ok due to the fact we have to write 8x 200 reflexive pieces.  I handed in my first assignment. A literature reviews of rotator cuff rehabilitation programmes.  Wednesday was my last day of clinic in the first rotatio...
